Blogs vs Wikis

While analyzing two major new media applications:blog and wiki, which both are web 2.0 applications,I found some similarities and differences between them.
A blog is usually maintained by its owner who regularly enters his comments on various topics such as music, politics or philosophy.Blog is more as a personal journal on line that can be frequently updated by the individual and reflects the personality and character of its owner.
In contrast,a wiki is a webpage as well, but it can be editable by all its users who may modernize it any way they want. One good example is Wikipedia,a big encyclopedia on line with thousands of articles on various topics. It is constantly evolving and can be changed by anyone.
I believe that convergence have a significant impact on today’s technology.Convergence is the combination of all different media into one operating platform, and it makes possible for one element to provide multi – service. One good example is Internet, which provides the most significant convergence service because it combines all know communication media into one single service available on a computer screen.
Since the Wikipedia is free to access, the contributions made by doctors, economists and other professionals should be rewarded for their quality and valuable ideas and allow them to earn a reasonable profit. Moreover, Wikis are usually collaborative, unlike most blogs because it permits content creation or revision by any person. It may also be created as a company internal network, where every employee may leave feedback or advices how to improve company performance.Blogs can be also use for collaboration in many ways. One of them is to create a blog which can be accessed by scientists in the particular field as medicine in order to allow them to publish their ideas and develop treatments which may bring hope to millions of people suffering from the diseases.
I believe that a good idea for a wiki that has not been done yet is to make it more secure by allowing a user to edit only his own text and left comments or rate on other people’s publications.

Old vs New

With the fast paced world we live in today, it is obvious that traditional paper and ink have been eclipsed by the power of modern technology, especially internet. New media consists of various blogs and websites that provide us with a necessary information in a matter of a few seconds unlike the traditional encyclopedias or books, where reader has to spend hours to find necessary information. Another positive aspect of new media is that it keeps up with the current events, breaking news such as the recent tragedy in Haiti or provides information about events which take place during the winter Olympic Games, dissimilar to old media as newspaper, where readers have to wait for morning newspapers to learn about any major events. Moreover, New media offers an access to information which can be changed, modernize or share with other people compare to old media as books where the written words are often impossible to change.

TERM PROJECT: Social Networking - Positive And Negative Effects On Society

For my term project, I will be analyzing the Social Networking Websites as Facebook and My Space. In the beginning of my paper, I will provide a brief history, and I will also discuss a rapid development of social networking for the past few years. Then I will describe some positive and negative effects these sites have on society.

WHAT IS NEW MEDIA ?

New media is an advanced technology that people using every day included Internet, websites, streaming video, computer games, and many more.
I strongly believe that internet is a very important part of new media. It is not only allowing people to obtain a multitude of diverse information, but also it is helping to accelerate globalization by transferring the necessary information and knowledge in various fields to provide educational resources for developing countries to improve their standard of living, increase efficiency in production. Advanced Internet technology became a base for economic growth, without it these countries will fall further into poverty and economic ruin with little hope for survival.
Moreover, through the internet people can use technology as video conferencing, email, chat rooms or other communication tools to connect in real time and conduct businesses with each other.
I believe that new media is outperforming traditional one because it can provide a broader and easier access to information like news, which can be obtained from various sites faster than from local newspapers. Because of the modern internet technology, I can access a digital library which provides thousands of books and read them in comfort of my home instead of taking a long trip to the local library.
